three minutes not enough, five minutes just fine ( porn clip length )

by Parker Dupris

If you look hard enough you can find scene length porn without much trouble. But the vast majority of free porn out there comes to you in three or five minute bites.

Why is this?

As it happens…  three minute clips lead to more sales, five minute clips lead to more “customer satisfaction”. If you’re into marketing, branding, sales, and creating brand advocates ( and let’s face it, who isn’t? ) then you have an issue, here. You want both sales -and- customer satisfaction. But it doesn’t work out that way. Customer satisfaction is not so high when measured by gauging the popularity of three minute sample clips of porn, and sales ( of porn-site memberships ) are not increased much if lots of five-minute clips are available.

Why is this?

I laughed when I found out. Most men, when viewing the three minute clip, won’t cum in that short amount of time. This means the guy has to reset constantly, and maybe eventually just say “fuck it,” go find his pants and his wallet, and join the site the 180 seconds of pure bliss comes from just so he can finally cum. Meanwhile, littering five minute ( or longer ) clips on your site will have peeps coming back like the swallows to Capistrano, but won’t move your sales needle too much. This is because if given five minutes and a decently edited porn clip, Most Masturbators can manage to cum.

I definitely prefer full-length clips myself. And lots of people think this is a bane to the porn industry. “Who’s gonna buy a membership if there’s all this free scene-length porn laying around?”

Lots and lots and lots of people, apparently.

It might be the same effect that a new car, new gun, or new computer have on you. “NEW!” and New has to be Bought, because I don’t have NEW. It may also be part keeping up with the joneses, but I doubt this. Part of it is branding… “wow, that hd-passion.com porn -looks- so well done, it’s almost like art!” part of it’s clever marketing ( “233 sites for FREE!” or “all our clips are downloadable” ). Part is possibly clever payment options ( “Pay through your phone bill, so no one by Ma Bell will know!” ) though I think this is just a way to screw people, personally. Also you can fall back on the basics- more consumers with more access and more free time and more shit making the real world a slightly darker place, so there’s an increase in “market awareness, development, and capitalization.”

But still, why are people buying more porn on the interweb, when it’s so free out there?

I think people are basically good, and while lots of people watch free porn and never pay ( let’s call them Beater-Off-ers ) some people will pay when exposed to a good product at a fair price that they want. I think the three minute clip and the five minute clip both help, here. The best thing the distributers of porn could do is put their little urls in the lower right corner of the scene.

“That’s where I can go to see more of this quality smut? I’m there. Where are my pants?”

We see this with iTumes, and Amazon, where if you offer a decent price point and the feeling of a quality product and a credible retailer people will buy when they could steal.

And the Beater-Off-ers?  They were never your customers anyway. They never had any intention of buying, so you’re not really losing anything there.
